The Copyright School Challenge 2023/24 Award Ceremony was held at the National Library Building as part of the Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2024. This marked the first time both the creative writing and video competition ceremonies were held together, adding to the event’s vibrancy.
In this year’s challenge, students were tasked with expressing the theme of “curiosity” through essay writing for Primary 3 and 4 students, poetry for Primary 5 and 6 students, and short videos for secondary and tertiary level students. With over 1000 entries received across both categories of the competition, the challenge saw nearly double the submissions from last year, indicating a rising popularity for the Copyright School Challenge.
Through various rubric breakdowns such as originality, literary merit, and impact, the judges had a tough time picking out the best entries from a vast array of creative submissions. For instance, Catherine Khoo, a judge of the Creative Writing competition, said, “The participants’ curiosity knew no limits, taking my breath away.” This comment was similarly shared by Muhammad Khairulnizam, who adjudicated for the Video competition, mentioning how “each submission demonstrated unique approaches and techniques, contributing to an engaging and thought-provoking video.” Evidently, the creativity of our local youths was on full display, no doubt giving Singapore’s arts scene a bright future.
Coming in 1st place for the Essay Writing competition was Lia Kim Yijin from Henry Park Primary School, and the runners up and second runners up were Adrienne Yeo Xin Lei from CHIJ Toa Payoh Primary and Rishan Gill from St Andrew’s Junior School respectively. The Poetry competition was a bit more tight where the judges felt the need to award two third placed winners. However, clinching top spot was Lara Pala-Krishnan Locke from Haig Girls’ School. In second was Chan You Xuan Heather from CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel and in joint third place were Ang En Long and Chan Cheok Yuet Fion from Ai Tong School and Yangzheng Primary School respectively.
For the Video Competition, coming in first was Team MeowMeowMeow from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School. Team Dove from Jurong Pioneer Junior College took second spot and in third was the pair of Lingxuan and Zihan from Canadian International School.
It was an utmost privilege for CLASS to have viewed all submitted entries, and send out our congratulations to the winners and our heartfelt thanks to all participants. We encourage all to never stop short of being “curious” and igniting the spark of creativity as you continue to read, write, film, and learn!
