We concluded our first Creative Writing Competition with an Award Ceremony that took place at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2023 on 27 May 2023.
The Copyright School Challenge 2023: Creative Writing Award Ceremony aims to encourage primary school students to express creativity through the writing of a poetry or essay piece. The competition was run in 2 categories- Essay Writing and Poetry Writing. The Essay Writing category was opened to Primary 3 and 4 students and the Poetry Writing category was opened to Primary 5 and 6 students. In total, we received close to 400 literary entries from the competition.
Through elements such as literary merit and innovativeness, the winners of the essay writing and poetry writing categories were selected by a panel of esteemed judges. For the essay writing category, the judges were Catherine Khoo from Experiments and Experiences Book, Nora Nazerene Abu Bakar from Penguin Random House and Lulu Skantze from Storytime Magazine. For the poetry writing category, the judges were Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips from Checkpoint Theatre, Marc Nair from Mackerel Magazine and Crispin Rodrigues, the Singaporean author of How Now Blown Cow. These judges were impressed with the originality and creativity of the literary works submitted in the competition.
The Award Ceremony that was held last Saturday, celebrated the finalists of the two categories and recognized the top young writers who had demonstrated outstanding creative artistry. In the essay writing category, Lee Kaia from Nan Hua Primary School emerged as the top storyteller. Aidan Weckx from Anderson Primary School and Geetisha Agrawal from GIIS Punggol Smart Campus were awarded with the first and second runner-up positions respectively. For the poetry writing category, Maanav Praseed from Overseas Family School came in first with Hailey Chua Yixin and Wu Yixuan, both from Nan Hua Primary School taking up the two runners-up positions. The top three winners of each category won cash awards of $500, $300 and $200 respectively.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all participants. Stay tuned to our social media pages and look out for our second instalment of the Creative Writing Competition that is set to be announced later this year!
