The grant is open to all Singapore citizens and permanent residents who are at least 18 years of age at the point of application. The applicant can be a writer or translator. They can work in any literary genre, from poetry to fiction, creative nonfiction, comics and picture books across the four official languages of Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil.

The objective of the grant is to help writers and translators deepen their practice, strengthen their craft, or develop their manuscripts. It can be used for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to paying for editorial services for your manuscript; working on a sample translation; attending a course or conference; or travelling to a residency or festival that you have been invited to. It depends on your proposal and its aim. The grant does not support non-literary work, as well as printing or publication, marketing activities, exhibition or performance.

A panel of assessors, comprising writers and practitioners from the industry, will assess the proposals. The proposals will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • The strength of the proposal;
  • The stated objectives, deliverables and timeline;
  • Track record of the applicant;
  • Potential of the project;
  • Interview (where needed).

You can apply online here https://writersplusgrant2024.paperform.co/. You have to submit your proposal and a proposed budget, and any supporting materials by the stipulated deadline. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. There are two application windows each year:

  • A sample of three (3) pieces of your writing/translation.

It depends on your proposal and proposed budget, and its stated objectives and deliverables. We are working on a co-funding arrangement. The grant will cover a portion of your realistic cost, but not 100%.

If your project is already supported by another grant or funding, this grant may still support a portion of your project that is unsupported but the panel may find suitable. However, you may need to check with the relevant agency or organisation(s) if you would be able to apply for additional funding.
