As the capabilities and potential uses of AI technology, and particularly generative AI technology, continue to evolve, CLASS is mindful of the impact that this growing technology will have on our membership – which includes both publishers and individual authors. To ensure that the rights and interests of our members are adequately protected, CLASS is lobbying for laws, policies and guidance that will ensure that the copyright balance continues to be struck when copyrighted works are used in connection with generative AI tools. This includes ensuring that any exceptions relating to the use of copyrighted works as training data are carefully calibrated, and adequate transparency as to what is used. At the same time, CLASS is of the view that such works should be clearly labelled to provide certainty to users and potential users of these works. More details can be found in CLASS’ Position Statement on AI, which is accessible here.
